Many types of cloches, cold frames and greenhouses are used to protect plants and to increase the temperature around them. However, where flat sections of glass or plastic are used, unless they are positioned at 90 degrees to the direction of the sun (which changes continually) they reflect much of the sun’s light. Since plants depend on light to photosynthesise and grow, this reflection of light away from the plants can partially counteract the effect of the increased temperature. Because of the curved shape of bell cloches, the surface of the cloche will always be at 90 degrees to the direction of the sun, thereby achieving minimum reflection and maximum penetration of light. This creates the optimum growing environment, and has a dramatic and very beneficial effect on plants.

Using Victorian Bell Cloches means earlier propagation, which in turn means earlier and longer cropping. There is much less risk of disease or infestation by insect pests; and they are a complete barrier against birds and small mammals.
